The prison dates back to 1776. The public executions were always guaranteed crowd pullers in years gone by The hangings retreated behind doors in 1862. The large 18th century structure towers above you as you drive into the car park. Look closely and you can see faces staring back at you from the old jail windows.
As you enter the jail and walk down the stairs the air begins to cool. The jail doesnt need pyro-technics to enhance the experience, you can sense the past just by walking around. You can visit the condemned cell and some grisly exhibits telling of the lives and imprisonment of the inmates of Bodmin Jail. The last hanging took place as recently as 1909. The Crown Jewels and Doomsday Book were stored here during the Great War.
To add this amazing history I think we should add that throughout the History of Bodmin Jail makes no mention of hauntings or ghosts but quite a few people consider Bodmin Jail a very haunted place! This is no doubt due to the fact that hangings did take place at Bodmin Gaol. Between, 1785 to 1909 there were 56 executions. It should be noted that this was a much smaller number of prisoners who had been sentanced to death. Its supposed that the reminder were either 'transported', (I think thats a term for sent to Australia), sent to hulks or sentenced to long periods in gaol.
